Mr. and Mrs. Williams
Logline: Relationship secrets come to light for a Governor during re-elections.
INT. LAVISH BEDROOM
We are in a lavish Master Bedroom. There is a large bed, a vanity dresser, a large walk in closet and en suite. It’s lavishly decorated and clearly owned by someone with money and power. On one bed-side table is a stack of books, philosophical and fantasy, and above are framed degrees with the name JESSICA WILLIAMS. The other bed-side-table is bare, with only charging ports for a phone and a lamp. There is a single book on it, some classic, but it’s dusty and untouched, no bookmark to dictate anyone’s place.
Mrs. Jessica Williams– a woman of no more than 35– is sitting in front of a vanity, preparing to get ready for the night. She’s wearing a floor length gown that has off-the-shoulder sleeves.
Mr. Mason Williams– a man of the same age– is in the room as well, getting dressed in a tuxedo.
Jessica Williams is visibly annoyed, sending glares to her husband through the glass of the mirror.
JESSICA WILLIAMS
I don’t want to go to another gala.
Mason Williams turns to look at her through the mirror as he fixes his necktie. They both remain silent as he makes his way over to her, she fixes her earrings in their places. Finally, he stands behind her and gently smooths his hands over her exposed shoulders before settling heavily around her shoulders. They’re both silent but glaring at one another through the mirror.
MASON WILLIAMS
I know that. That’s why I didn’t ask you to come; I told you to.
Mr. Williams offers a smug smile before turning his back to go inside their walk in closet, leaving the door open a crack as he does so. Jessica remains seated, rolling her eyes before trying to reach around to zip her dress on her own.
MASON (O.C.)
James will be there!
Jessica freezes in the mirror, finally giving up on the zipper as she tries to pull herself together. She can’t let on that the idea of James being there tonight excites her. She clears her throat, shrugging to herself in the mirror: fake it till you make it.
JESSICA
Oh?
MASON (O.C.)
(mocking)
Oh?
Mr. Williams kicks the closet door open so they can see one another again. He’s sitting on an ottoman in the closet, tying his shoes.
MASON
(coyly)
Don’t play stupid with me, darling. We both know how much you adore my best friend.
Jessica stays silent and walks over to Mr. Williams as he finishes tying his shoes. She walks over, turns her back to him and bares her unzipped dress to him.
JESSICA
I adore all of your friends. They’ve attributed to your gubernatorial win.
Mr. Williams zips her dress without a word. She returns to the mirror for final touches as he slips his arms in his tuxedo jacket. He disappears for a moment inside the closet, leaving Jessica to silently calm her nerves in the mirror before he comes back out, walking up behind her once more.
MASON
What’s that thing you liked to tell me when we were campaigning? Fight fire with fire? Consider this a checkmate, doll.
Mr. Williams brings a pair of shoes from behind his back, setting them on the top of her vanity counter as he levels his mouth with her ear, whispering in it tauntingly
MASON
Wear these tonight. He’ll like the way they look wrapped around his body.
Jessica blinks dumbly at his response before bending down and slipping the shoes on her feet. Mr. Williams remains beside her, smirking as she looks up at him at her new height.
MASON
Ready to go, milady?
CUT TO:
INT. LAVISH GALA HALL
We enter behind the couple of the hour into a lavish gala hall. There’s silver and crystal everywhere. Waiters and Waitresses carrying platters of drinks around to the huddled groups of politicians.
Mr. and Mrs. Williams enter the room and eyes are on them immediately. They’re arm in arm as Mr. Williams shakes hands with the men, leaving the women silent and gliding beside their husbands.
They reach a corner of the room and Mr. Williams begins talking with another couple. Mr. Williams cracks a joke and the couple laugh loudly, while Mrs. Williams fakes a smile and laugh along with them. She’s focused more on the surrounding area, looking for James.
From off camera, we hear a distinct male laugh, and see Jessica’s eyes light up. It’s James. She remains beside Mason until he gets closer, acting coy, like she doesn’t even know James is here.
MASON
There he is!
JAMES
Hey, man. How’s it going
The couple walk off as James comes up and Mason’s attention is taken off of them, leaving Mason and Jessica alone with James.
Jessica turns around to see him as Mason and James bro hug a greeting.
MASON
What took you so long? We were starting to get worried about you, weren’t we, darling?
James greets Jessica with a polite kiss on the cheek as she composes herself to respond.
JESSICA
Yes, yes we were.
JAMES
I was running a little late
(whispering)
I really didn’t want to be here tonight.
Mason booms with laughter as his hand goes to James’ shoulder, putting on a show for the onlookers.
MASON
I’ll tell you what, you see the Misses home and I’ll tell everyone you have food poisoning and couldn’t stay.
There’s a beat of silence as Jessica looks between Mason and James confused and James silently sips a drink a waitress walked by with.
JESSICA
What?
MASON
(faux concern)
Didn’t you say you wanted to go home? You hate these things, darling, I’d hate to torture you. Let James take you home, we’ll chalk it up to these room temperature shrimp, right?
James shrugs and Jessica remains silent. She knows this is a ploy.
MASON
James will take good care of you while I schmooze the night away, right James?
James nods and Jessica agrees silently, taking James by the arm as they begin to walk towards the door. As they get closer, James whispers to her
JAMES
(whispering)
What was that all about?
JESSICA
(whispering… lying)
I have no idea
They near the door, about to leave when Mason begins clinking a knife on his glass, gaining the room’s attention.
MASON
Look how cute, everyone. The love of my life is leaving with the love of hers!
James and Jessica are silent, stunned. Jessica’s face is full of shock as James turns around to look quizzically at his best friend. Everyone else in the hall is looking at them, gasping, whispering, pointing, shocked. James begins taking steps closer to Mason, to calm him down, but Mason merely appears bored, not angry.
JAMES
Look, man, we don’t have to do this here
MASON
No? I think this is the perfect place to finish this
Jessica rolls her eyes, suddenly getting the tactic. He wants to get ahead of any election leaks of their marital issues; he wants to paint her as the unfaithful one.
JESSICA
Honey…
MASON
(mockingly)
Honey… I think we both know that this needed to happen.
James peers behind him to Jessica, who is fuming and annoyed, as Mason rears back and punches him in the face as James turns back to look at him.
MASON
That’s for sleeping with my wife
The crowd takes a step away from them, oohing and awing, some bringing their phones out to video the event. Jessica scoffs, comforting James as he holds his face.
JESSICA
You cannot be serious right now
MASON
You should know by now that I don’t like sharing, honey.
JESSICA
(scoffs)
Sharing? What about me? You think you’re gonna get by without everyone finding out you were sleeping around during your first campaign?
The crowd gasps again.
JESSICA
And let’s not forget the sneaking out at night to see Mrs. Wisconsin. Greg? Do you like sharing your wife?
The crowd murmurs once more, this time there’s more laughter.
Jessica takes James around the shoulders and guides him back toward the door to leave.
JESSICA
You’ll get your papers by the end of the week, Governor Williams. Good luck being the Family First Nominee without a Family.
Jessica and James leave the Gala and Mason stands still, smiling to those around him, already trying to clean the mess they’ve made for themselves.
A slightly older man makes his way through the crowd – It’s Greg, Governor of Wisconsin.
GREG
What’s this about you and my wife, Mason?
MASON
(stammering)
Greg, hey man. No, it’s nothing. Nothing to worry about at all…
Mason gestures a “nothing” gesture, focusing more on the crowd than Greg, who gives Mason a piece of his own medicine and punches him in the face as he turns back to look at Greg. Greg then lays a hand on Mason’s shoulder, getting real close to him
GREG
(whispers)
From the bottom of my heart Governor, Fuck you.
We are left watching as the crowd slowly disperses, whispering and murmuring about the events they’d just witnessed as Mason attempts to compose himself. He tries smiling through it and striking up conversation with men as they pass him, but they ignore and snicker at him.
Finally, Mason runs a hand through his hair and fixes his tuxedo jacket and clears his throat.
MASON
Don’t forget to vote, you guys!
The camera leads Mason out the door of the hall, and we cut to black as he walks out the door, into the camera.
THE END.
